The Pastille Dress: Learning Sucks Edition

Welcome to 2013!

One of the things I decided to do this year was to sew more clothes.  I was gifted the Colette Sewing Handbook by the ever-wonderful Kristen and Eryn and am very excited to learn from it!

The first project of the New Year that I am setting out to tackle is none other than the Pastille dress featured on the cover of the book!

I got some lovely grey suiting from Joann's and intend to wear the dress with tights and scarves to accessory it up a bit and get more variety out of the basic sheath dress.

Taking what I learned from my Craftsy classes, I went through all the trouble to trace all the pattern pieces onto muslin thinking I was being so smart.

I should have traced a size larger because I didn't leave myself any room to adjust for fit.  I don't know why I am incapable of getting it through my head to just cut out the larger size and take it in to fit perfectly.  So much easier to take something in than let it out.  Vanity. Making my sewing life harder since 1994.  It sucks.  But now I know.

Luckily I have Claudia now!

Say hello, Claudia

I got her as a Christmas gift from my mother-in-law so hopefully there will be a lot fewer tears and what-the-fuck hands when I get to the end of sewing a garment.  Claudia can help me make sure the fit is good.  Yes, it takes a little more time on the front end, cutting out a muslin and all that jazz, but once I know she's looking good in a dress, chances are, I will also look good in the dress.  Especially since I have arms... and a head.

So I'm proud of myself for wasting no time this year getting about the business of making stuff, mad that I need to go get more muslin and cut it out a bit bigger so I can make it all fit, and encouraged that this is going to be an awesome new year.

  1. Oh, I'm so excited about your journey with that book. Claudia is looking fine, styling your muslim.

It calls to me but with my figure, Claudia would have to be a pachyderm. ;)

A big woot for realizing it's easier to take in that add. Such useful knowledge to have with almost everything.

You might make me into a garment sewist yet.

  2. I was just trying to convince Jacqueline that she needed this book during our last #VCN. You've seen my finished version, which I do love, but I kinda wish it was in a less quilty fabric. The poplin means it's a bit stiffer than I would like, so I'm super glad you went with that beautiful suiting fabric.
